A Fortnite Birthday in Quarantine

My decision to up and move to Canada for 5 weeks this summer was not one that came without a boatload of stress. I am finding that every single decision I make during this global pandemic is a difficult one and one that has no certainty. The decision to hop on a plane and get a change of scenery that will ultimately lead to seeing my best friends and family, was the right one. And one that I made for the benefit of my (and my children’s) mental health.

We arrived in Toronto safely on July 3rd. Before leaving, I had made plans for ways to celebrate Luke’s 8th birthday on July 6th, all of which I canceled, not because I ended up coming to Canada, but because I had cold feet about getting a group of people together and possibly spreading the virus. It’s all so confusing! In the end, since we came to Canada…only 3 days prior to Luke’s birthday, I ended up having NOTHING planned for him.

Once we got settled into our new, temporary house, I reached out to my friend Ashley Lindzon who is an event planner in Toronto. It was only 2 days prior to Luke’s birthday so I wasn’t sure she could help in anyway given how last minute it was, but I thought it was worth a try!

Ashley didn’t hesitate she just said, what, when and where. She was SO HELPFUL!

I shared the following details with Ashley:

  1. Luke is obsessed with Fortnite

  2. Fortnite color palette (from what I can see online) is: green, black, white, blue and purple

  3. I want balloons, a cake and a lawn sign

  4. I’d love some themed tableware if possible

Ashley immediately got to work and told me she’d get back to me by the morning (which would then be the day before Luke’s birthday).

I told Ashley that I was on a strict quarantine so it would all have to be dropped off, preferably that night so I could set it all up while Luke was asleep and he could wake up to it all on his birthday.

Ashley came back to me and said: DONE DONE DONE DONE. I can do it all. Expect a delivery for decor to arrive tonight by 9pm and the cake will arrive fresh and ready to serve at 11am on Luke’s birthday. I squealed with joy! How perfect?!

The balloons were perfect. There were 2 jumbos that came on weights so I just had to drop them into place. There was a jumbo “8” balloon and a balloon garland that I easily taped to the glass door to the backyard. Ashley sourced (so last minute!) Fortnite confetti and tableware for me to use for breakfast (and lunch!) and the most fabulous cake ever!

Needless to say…Luke was pretty floored when he woke up on July 6th and saw that the entire kitchen was decked out in a Fortnite theme all for his birthday. To top it all off, I organized a special Fortnite game with his two besties. I had cupcakes delivered to both best friends so before they started to play, they could each share in singing “Happy Birthday” to Luke over cake and cupcakes together.

It was the perfect way for Luke to celebrate his 8th birthday in quarantine. Couldn’t have done it without Ashley’s help and couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out for my baby!
